PM Modi’s Mann ki Baat touches young accident victim’s family

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’ on Sunday touched hearts and brought the muchneeded hope and cheer to the family of a 20-year-old student, who bled to death on a Delhi road after meeting with an accident.

Vinay Jindal, 20, a BBA student, died after the scooty he was riding was rammed by a speeding car in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area on Monday night. He lay there bleeding, and writhing in pain. Several cars and motorbikes passed by but no one bothered to help. Vinay died of excessive bleeding, two days before his sister’s wedding.

On Sunday, Modi expressed grief over the death of the young man, while sharing his concern over the high rate of fatalities in road accidents.

Vinay’s family was pleasantly surprised and thanked the Prime Minister for remembering him.

“It was an honour,” said Mahendra Gupta, Vinay’s uncle.

“I was surprised that the PM took notice of this case. It shows how sensitive he is. He has the responsibility of the entire nation and yet he took time to mention the case. He urged the people to be sensitive and help whenever they see such a case instead of just walking away as it concerns someone’s life. Now, since the PM has said it, I am assured that what happened to my son, will not happen to someone else,” Gupta said.

He added, “There were tears in my eyes when I came to know that the PM shared our pain. He even invited the family to meet him and I will definitely go to see him.”

Gupta also said that he will request the PM to provide employment to Vinay’s mother and some compensation so that she is able to secure the future of her family, he said. Vinay was the lone male member in the family, her mother being a widow.

“Two days back I came across an incident of a road accident in Delhi. The scooter driver was lying on the road for 10 minutes after the accident. He received no help at all,” the PM said in the Mann ki Baat.

“It is a fact that the government has taken a lot of initiatives in this direction. Keeping in mind the issues of education on road safety, the engineering behind road construction, the enforcement of road safety laws and taking accident victims to hospital, we are bringing in the Road Transport and Safety Bill. The government is also planning to take steps to bring in a National Road Safety Policy and road safety in the days to come,” the Prime Minister said.
